Glaciers are formed through repeated freezing and thawing of snow layers. There are two different types of glaciers. The first type is a warm glacier that has a layer of melt water that lubricates its surface. In contrast, cold glaciers have little or no melt water and only flow internally. Glaciers represent about 75% of the world’s fresh water supply that covers 10% of the earth’s surface. Studying the composition, changes in atmospheric and seawater circulation changes presents great information on the causes and effects of glacial cycles by using glaciers as they reform to certain conditions.

Earthquakes are caused by plate tectonics. Molten rock from the earth’s center forms into a film that floats on its surface, forming plates. The plates move with the rising heat and spreads out on the surface. The earth’s crust consists of a number of sections or plates that float on the molten rock of the mantle. These plates move on convection currents caused by heat rising from the center of the earth. The hot magma rises and spreads out on the surface, creating new crust. How these plates interact with each other and different areas of the earth’s surface and pressure points is the basis for earthquakes. This is quite an interesting study.

Rivers are our natural watercourse, flowing toward an ocean, lake or sea, or another river. Part of the hydrological cycle, a river is usually formed by precipitation through surface runoff, groundwater springs or melting glaciers. Habitats for creatures, a source of food and navigation can be thanked for our freshwater rivers. Their protection is utmost in man’s survival. A green degree in rivers can help understand the benefits, how to protect and how to discover and head off problems in the future.

Volcanoes are a puzzle to most. A rupture in the planet’s surface, allows hot, molten rock, ash and gases to escape from below the surface. Usually found where the plate tectonics are counteracting with one another and where there is a known hot spot, pressure is released through the surface occasionally, causing an eruption. There are several different types of volcanoes including lava domes, cryptodomes, volcanic cones, stratovolcanoes, supervolcanoes, submarine volcanoes, subglacial volcanoes and mud volcanoes.

Green studies offer much about our planet and its workings. There are hundreds of subjects available in green degrees and the observations and learning can be a welcome journey to those who want to help our planet thrive.

A green type of study that deals with a variety of subject matter is ecology. Ecology is the study of the interactions between organisms and their environment. This can be applied toward any breed of living things. Some examples include wildlife conservation, habitat management, and mitigation of ecological impacts of environmental pollution, fisheries and forestry. Applied, agriculture, natural resource management, forestry and wildlife management can be careers that you could enter into.

Agriculture has come a long way since the 1950s. Almost every country in the world now has the ability and tools to raise and trade food. New technology has made it possible to genetically alter seeds to perform better and our fuel is now generated from parts of soybeans and corn. New plants are being introduced to handle our growing food chain. Learning plants, soil, irrigation and other necessary parts of our land in order to further our future is what agriculture is all about.

Forestry is the art and science of managing forests, tree plantations and related natural resources. Natural water quality management is a large part of forestry since water is essential to plants and wildlife. Understanding trees and the wood they produce, landscaping and tending to trees can also be part of forestry. Knowing and understanding what is helpful and harmful to our land’s air filtration system is a very important job for someone with a love of nature and trees.

Wildlife conservation deals with using scientific principles to research wildlife and habitat in order to better know the workings and offer solutions to problems that arise. Benefits sought may be ecological, economic, social, recreational, or scientific. A few examples are noting signs of animal extinction, studying behavioral patterns and educating the public to wildlife species and conservation. This is a wonderful field for those with a love of science and nature.

Habitat management can involve increasing, decreasing or maintaining current numbers of different species of wildlife. The techniques used to monitor habitats are also valuable in studying how plants and animals play a role in their world. Many habitats support the ecosystem naturally and learning how to support this is essential to nature. Having a high level of plant succession and quality wildlife habitat using basic tools makes this type of green degree /a> very satisfying.

Environmental pollution is a subject that has everyone interested in. Ground water and drinking water have become affected by everything from petroleum to pesticides and bacteria. Air pollution occurs when unnatural chemicals, particle matter or biological materials enter our atmosphere. The lack of forests and trees that used to filter the air further complicates this matter. A green degree in environmental pollution can bring answers to dealing with such an immense problem and offering future hope.

There is a lot to choose from in the area of natural ecology. Having a passion for science, biology and nature is a great start in seeing what type of classes are offered and starting your green career.

As environmental awareness and the trend toward the adaptation of sustainability practices become common in corporate America, the academic world is placed in a unique position to make a significant contribution to this trend by providing education and training that responds to this trend.

With their academic networks and partnerships with local and/or regional businesses, Community Colleges are in an excellent position to spearhead the workforce preparation for the emerging industries in the field of environmental awareness. Competency-based green training programs, integration of skills specific to the green industries helps communities ensure that they are able to supply the labor needed to fill emerging positions in the green industry.

These green-specific jobs training and workforce preparation should be the result of multi-sectoral efforts among sectors in the industry that contribute to its mechanisms. Building, Construction, Engineering, Design, Renewable Energy Sources, Transportation and Agriculture are core sectors that require a steady supply of workers skilled in green technology and applications.

Community Colleges and Their Role in a Sustainable Green Workforce

Says the National Renewable Energy Lab, the biggest challenge in the emergency environmental field is not financial, legal or other technical aspects, but the short supply of competent workforce for the various green industries. Green jobs that are vital to the overall well-being of a community require a special set of skills and knowledge – academic competencies – to fill different roles.

Most green jobs today require at least a high school diploma and some college. As in any new industries, the requirements for positions in the green industries will require a set of skills and educational qualifications that are derived from other disciplines and fields. Ultimately, these derivative skills and competencies must be customized to suit the needs of the industry. This requires Community Colleges and educational partners to engineer green education and training programs through a career path with an industry-wide accreditation and credentials. This means modification of existing green programs and integration of allied disciplines to provide the green industry with competency-based training programs for its workforce.

Education and Preparation of the Green Workforce

With the rapidly increasing demand for skilled labor to fill green collar jobs, Community Colleges across America are now beginning to offer training programs for green collar jobs, adapting educational programs and training choices from certificate programs, associate degrees, apprenticeships, technical education programs and service-learning protocols.

The Santa Fe Community College Sustainable Technology in New Mexico offers several Green jobs training programs alongside various non-credit courses. Plus, they also provide credit programs from certificates in green building systems, environmental technology training, solar energy training to an A.A.S. in environmental technology.

The Red Rocks Community College offers an A.A.S. degree program that in renewable energy technology. Combining elements of existing carpentry and construction technology solutions and HVAC, the program integrates energy system design, audit and solar panel installation.

As part of the bill that passed in February of 2009, the Green Jobs Training /a> Act allocated $500 million in education for green collar jobs of the future. As part of that package, $150 million was in “Pathways out of Poverty” grants for “cohesive programs that will help target populations find pathways out of poverty and into economic self sufficiency through employment in the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries.”

Green jobs training programs for certain individuals are covered under the grants that are specified for certain populations that are eligible to receive the grants. Those would include unemployed individuals, high school dropouts, individuals with criminal records and disadvantaged individuals within areas of high poverty.

The initial reception has been good, however, not all that grant money has been used. Many of the critics have said that it is slow to be communicated to those that qualify under the program. In many cases, it pays for 100% of tuition and books and is a great opportunity for workers to get a higher paying job in a growing market that is expected to have stability for many years to come.

As the push for Green jobs training programs has come from the Federal government, they have also provided funding on State levels, where many of the colleges and universities can receive additional funding for adding the “green” curriculum to their degree courses.

Because the anticipated need for green collar workers could be as high as 37 million, the government is hoping that this initiative will be the ticket out of the present economic nightmare and put many under-qualified individuals on a new footing in a high demand job sector where they can receive annual average salaries in excess of $95,000. Many of those in poverty levels will find themselves with a much brighter future.

The Pathways out of Poverty grants are included in a summary from the Department of Labor and the green jobs initiative is being administered by the ETA, the Employment and Training Administration, which is part of the US Department of Labor. The Pathways out of Poverty grant portion has been attributed to the new Secretary of Labor, Solis.

Prior to this newest $500 million funding program, the previous Administration had approved $125 million in 2007. This had little effect and not much was changed. Once fuel prices started their dramatic rise, there was a push for more funding to become less reliant on foreign countries for our energy needs.

Vice President Biden recently stated in a summit in Philadelphia that the green jobs training programs would see $20 per hour workers start making $50 per hour after completion. If this is true, the Pathways out of Poverty grants will be a good investment in helping those people out of poverty that don’t see anything promising in their future. Of course, it is believed that the total stimulus package will encourage enough future job growth and energy independence that it will also be part of our country’s “pathway out of poverty”, too.
